Don’t Miss NY11+’s Collegiate Exhibition in Manhattan

Since March 1, Port Authority Midtown Bus Terminal’s erstwhile gritty halls have seen a face lift, in the form of New York Eleven Plus (NY11+)’s collegiate exhibit “Paths to Professionalism.” The convivial and enlightening showcase is once again sponsored by Interior Design, and includes works by students from such leading metro-area schools as the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT SUNY), New York Institute of Technology, New York School of Interior Design (NYSID), Parsons The New School (SCE), Pratt Institute, Rochester University, School of Visual Arts (SVA), and Villa Maria College. Founded in 1997 by legendary architect and industry champion Ruth Lynford, NY11+ is a nonprofit aimed at promoting public awareness of the interior design profession as a valuable career path.

Exploring these merits, NY11+ has curated a “compelling presentation, showcasing sustainable principles and narratives that underscore the significance of interior design in our daily lives,” notes Myron Johnson, PABT Curator of Arts and Entertainment.

Students hailing from eight design schools showcase work at the “Paths to Professionalism” exhibit in Manhattan’s Port Authority Midtown Bus Terminal.

Coinciding with the UN’s World Creativity and Innovation Day, the largest collaborative creativity festival from April 19-21, the exhibition invites onlookers to ponder the tangible impact of interior design on our mental and physical wellbeing through art addressing sustainable design principles and featuring innovative building materials. In an ever-evolving, post-pandemic world, interior design is a burgeoning specialty for students, with manifold use cases.

One student at Villa Maria College, Alyssa Kita, created a healthcare studio project, “Little Smiles, Big Creations,” which uses modular furniture, a drawing screen, and complementary colors to enhance a pediatric dentist’s practice. “These solutions give the occupants the opportunity to create their own space, taking their minds off the fear of being at the dentist,” she says. Up next, Kita plans to pursue a masters in business with the goal of starting her own practice.

“The interior design profession increasingly includes obtaining relevant education and certifications, and networking with industry professionals, and staying updated on current trends and technologies,” remarks NY11+ vice president and founder of HG DesignWorks, Hans J. Galutera, who sits on the board of the New York State of Education (NYSED). “Essentially, it encompasses the journey towards becoming a respected and accomplished interior design professional,” continues Galutera.

Expect to see works by future vanguards of the A&D industry, on view until April 30.
