Farrow & Ball recently unveiled an eye-catching addition to its new West Hollywood flagship: Summer, a 50-by-12-foot mural that city artist Ali Silverstein created using the brand’s proprietary paint. Revealed during the LA Design Festival (June 20-23), it’s the first installment in the company’s “creative billboard” series, which commissions large-format works from creatives who have some relationship to Los Angeles to showcase the paint’s versatility.

The medium is a perfect fit for Silverstein, who pre-mixes her paint colors, finding them more conducive to improvisation. Store visitors might recognize some of the bold hues in Summer’s palette, including Arsenic, Blazer, Pitch Blue, Preference Red, Yellowcake.

“It was thrilling to have access to the entire, incomparable color palette of Farrow & Ball to paint these pieces,” says Silverstein. “The paint is velvety, and therefore it’s easy to play with transparency and opacity. Adding a little water allowed me to emphasize brush strokes, while using it right from the can covers over anything smoothly and easily.”

After completing multiple large-format abstract paintings, Silverstein collaged them together, scanned them, and had them printed on vinyl.

“At Farrow & Ball, we have always been inspired by artists whose work draws on a strong use of color, and Ali’s paintings exemplify that,” says Charlotte Cosby, head of creative for Farrow & Ball. “As an L.A.-based artist who uses color so fearlessly, she is the perfect choice for our first billboard artwork commission at our new Los Angeles Flagship.”

Summer will remain on view through the end of the summer, along with several other panels of a work that Silverstein created in collaboration with Farrow & Ball for Frieze Los Angeles art fair this past February. These panels, which were exhibited on the facade of Los Angeles design gallery GRAYE, will remain on view at Farrow & Ball indefinitely.
